Safe Sex Advice for over 45's
A recent survey by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britian (RPSGB) found that adults over 45 years old are less aware of the risks of STIs than teenagers. It is clear that teenagers are heavily targeted with safe sex messages and they consequently have far more understanding and discussion today than in the 20th century.
Dr Cath White, GP at Doctorcall says that “Men and women coming out of a long-term relationship may have spent years not using condoms and so are less likely to think of using them with a new partner. If you have had unprotected sex with a new partner in the past 6 months it is advisable for you and your partner to have a routine sexual health screen. Many infections can be present without any visible signs or symptoms.”
Adults coming out of long-term relationships and into new ones need to be aware that STIs do not discriminate by age and that they and their new partners risk contracting an infection by having unprotected sex. With an increasing number of adults beginning relationships in later life, safe sex campaigns should be targeted at this group. Our advice is to get tested regularly and have protected sex by using condoms.
