Seasonal influenza vaccination provides a good degree of protection against influenza.  However, flu strains often vary and if you are exposed to a strain of influeza that is not includes within your seasonal influenza vaccine, you may still be at risk of contracting influenza.  That is where the antivirial treatments, oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza) may be able to help.

Both Tamiflu and Relenza can be used for either the treatment or the prevention of influenza.  When taken within two days of experiencing symptoms, they act to prevent spread of the influenza virus within the body.  For influenza prophylaxis following exposure Tamiflu or Relenza can prevent infection.

Approved for adults and children aged 1 year and older

Tamiflu must be taken within 12 to 48 hours from the first appearance of flu symptoms
