How long would a pandemic last?

A key characteristic of a flu pandemic is that the first phase would affect the population over a very short period of only about 15 weeks. Bad enough – but the likelihood is that there would probably be a second wave of infection, possibly followed by a third.

Planning for it has to include the possibility of disruption stretching beyond an initial four month period, with up to a year a worst case.

This is in contrast to most Disaster Recovery planning where the disaster – e.g. fire or flood - occurs suddenly, the event is soon over (thought the aftermath continues), and it tends to be buildings and processes which are hit rather than people.

How many would be affected in Britain?
The World Health Organisation believes that the most likely rate of infection would be 25% of the population of any country including Britain but with a worst case scenario of 50%. This gives a total of 13 million people infected at the likely rate, and 26 million at the higher rate. The WHO anticipates a death rate of 0.37%, giving a total of 50,000 dead in Britain but with a worst-case rate of 2.5% resulting in 600,000 deaths.
