What are the symptoms?
No-one knows exactly what the symptoms would be because the H5N1 virus would have to mutate before it could affect humans on a pandemic scale and the symptoms of the new virus are unpredictable.
Symptoms of the current H5N1 virus are generally similar to those of ordinary flu but worse. They include a sudden onset of fever, coughing, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, chest and stomach pain, extreme tiredness and aching muscles. On the evidence so far from those who have contracted avian flu it would also include severe respiratory distress.
Development of the illness where it has been observed has been very rapid, with only 5-13 days between onset and death.
