NottingHill Housing
Healthy employees at Notting Hill Housing Notting Hill Housing is one of the largest providers of affordable housing in and around the London area. Established in 1963, with over 18,000 homes across London and now employing around 750 staff, it has to ensure that its workforce stay fit and healthy.
Challenge In order for Notting Hill Housing to continue to transform housing in London they need to recruit and retain staff to deliver a consistent, high service level. Moreover, they need to reduce the recurring problem of long-term sickness. Doctorcall has been established for over twenty years and were approached by Notting Hill Housing to help identify where they could make cost savings in recruitment and retention and improve their processes. Doctorcall was also asked to look at how they could reduce the long-term sickness of staff and get them back into the workplace quicker. As an independent third party Doctorcall can objectively work with both the employer and employee to ensure the best outcome for both.

Solution Doctorcall’s Occupational Health team worked closely with Notting Hill Housing’s HR Department to understand the needs of the organisation and its clients along with a review of its current processes. With so many employees and continued growth, it was clear that Notting Hill Housing would benefit from Pre-Employment Screening, enabling them to assess the suitability of the candidate for the required role. Doctorcall suggested a long-term sickness management programme was set up and this would provide longterm sickness assistance supporting the staff member whilst getting back into the workplace. It was agreed that the Occupational Health team would work closely with the HR department along with the specific line manager to monitor and review the situation.

Results The Pre-Employment Screening and Long-Term Sickness Programme has been in place for three years and has provided a valuable service to both Notting Hill Housing and employees. Helen Frost, HR Operations Manager, said, “With staff numbers continuing to increase we have to take a proactive role in managing long-term sickness. Doctorcall’s service allows us to benefit from independent advice in the management of both long-term and short-term sickness including pre-employment screening and has been a very valuable complement to our HR team”. Notting Hill Housing continues to work with Doctorcall towards supporting their staff to ensure they maintain a good work life balance.

Computer Share
Computershare Investor Services Computershare was established in 1978 in Australia and now has offices in 17 countries whilst employing around 10,000 people. Computershare is a global leader in transfer agency and share registration, employee equity plans, proxy solicitation and other specialised financial, governance and communication services.
Challenge Computershare has developed a world-class reputation for the delivery and registration of servicing solutions for companies across the globe and is heavily reliant on its staff to deliver this. In 2007 the company identified the need to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their pre-employment and long-term sickness screening and appointed Doctorcall, who have been established for over twenty years. Doctorcall was asked to look at how the recruitment and screening processes were currently set up, how they could reduce the number of staff absent from work due to long-term sickness and devise a programme to support them both.

Solution Doctorcall’s Occupational Health team began with a review of the current recruitment and long-term sicknessprocesses. Doctorcall suggested using pre employment questionnaires and set up a long-term sickness management programme to provide assistance to the staff member whilst getting back into the workplace. It was agreed that the Occupational Health team would work closely with the specific line manager to monitor and review the situation.

Results Computershare said, “We outsourced our pre-employment and long-term sickness screening to Doctorcall three years ago and the service we have received during this time has always been professional and efficient. The Doctorcall PEQ has greatly assisted us when making key recruitment decisions and their third-party support in the management of long-term sickness cases has helped to alleviate the workload within our busy team.” Computershare Investor Services continues to work with Doctorcall towards supporting their staff to ensure they maintain a good work life balance.

Carphone Warehouse
Carphone Warehouse The Carphone Warehouse Group is an independent retailer of mobile phones and services throughout Europe. They began in 1989 and with both organic growth and acquisitions they now have over 2,400 stores in 9 countries.
Challenge Carphone Warehouse is heavily reliant upon its workforce in stores, call centres and support functions to ensure they provide the highest possible service level. Without a fit and healthy workforce, Carphone Warehouse will be unable to provide the necessary service level to customers and risk losing business. With reports of high levels of flu in the past couple of winters, Carphone Warehouse wanted to reduce the chances of their staff catching flu at the same time and potentially being off work for up to 2 weeks. If this happened both sales and the service levels would be negatively affected and lead to a potential loss of business.

Solution In 2006 Doctorcall, the UK’s largest supplier of flu vaccinations was brought in to provide a flu vaccination program at selected Carphone Warehouse sites. This year they decided that they would offer all their staff the option to have a flu jab by using a combination of on site nurses and also by issuing flu vaccination vouchers redeemable at selected high street retailers to their field based employees with the costs covered by Carphone Warehouse. Carphone Warehouse saw this as a vital part of their business continuity planning with the flu vaccination the best chance of protecting against flu.

Results Carphone Warehouse have seen a reduction in the number of staff who are off with flu symptoms and attribute this as a direct result of the flu vaccination programme. Tony Blakemore, HR Project Manager, from Carphone Warehouse commented ‘We have been pleased with the results over the past 2 years and hope to continue with this programme on an annual basis. We have used Doctorcall for a number of years and their nurses are always professional and they understand our requirements.

Doctorcall through its occupational health service provide flu vaccinations throughout the UK to companies and individuals.
