Hosted by the International Assistance Group (IAG), the 33rd IAG Forum will bring together the IAG’s accredited service providers and partners across five different continents – to explore the exciting developments inside the world of medical, travel and roadside assistance.

The running revolution continues to gain pace in the UK with more and more people taking up local parkrun challenges. Adult (5km) and Junior (2km) parkruns are being added to the already extensive list throughout the UK and Europe. It’s great to see and a great social model to be a part of. But how many of us have actually read or received any advice on how to actually run? Unless you’ve run at a decent level as a kid, not many.

Running is often a painful learning curve and a journey of discovery as you get things a little wrong along the way. The potential pit falls of going too far/fast too soon, making poor footwear choices, poor nutrition/ hydration decisions and insufficient body conditioning makes for a daunting journey and people tend to learn the hard way when they get it wrong.

Run technique is huge part of running yet is often neglected by the majority. Whilst there are many unique styles that work for many people, there are also many efficiencies that can be gained by tweaking one’s run technique.

Nick at City Physio brings together a physical assessment of how your body moves/doesn’t move as well as it could along with an analysis of your running technique. The aim is to come up with some strategies to help you gain a more efficient running style. This will not only reduce the chance of future injuries but can also enable you to run further and faster (should you wish!).

Nick has been running at a social and local club level for 20 years (more keenly in the past 10) and working within sport as a physio for 20 years. It made sense to combine his job and hobby to enhance that feel good feeling. Since attending the Movement and Running School in 2017, he has been working with local club runners in Manchester City Centre to enhance and optimise their own run technique.

In honour of National Fitness Day, a nationwide celebration that highlights the importance of physical activity in helping us to lead healthier, happier lifestyles, here are a few helpful tips from Doctorcall to help you kickstart your way to a new era of health and fitness.

As summer ends, soon the new year will be ushered in, along with the plethora of gym-related resolutions that will be taken up only to be dropped again the following month like a humble squat. You do not need to wait until the new year however, to get moving on your fitness goals. The one where you go on a break

Take a break from the screen and stretch your legs. It’s easy to spend the day tied to your desk – in fact a new survey found that most people (81%) spend between four and nine hours a day sitting at their desk. Taking a break, however, not only boosts productivity and creativity, but also helps to reduce stress and exhaustion. Constant sitting, on the other hand, leads to a sedentary lifestyle, putting you at higher risk of heart disease, depression, obesity and diabetes. Just a 5 minute walk every hour is beneficial to physical health. So take a break, grab some frozen yoghurt or something.

The one where you go out

Studies show that more than a third of British employees choose to have lunch at their desk – more than 1 in three British employees work through their lunch every single day. Employees often feel chained to their desk due to high workloads and demands, but (even when the rain starts to pour) making the time to get some fresh air can help you to combat the afternoon slumps, with research showing that it’s not only physically beneficial but also helps you to feel more enthusiastic and relaxed.

The one where you … Pivot!

Instead of using the lift, try taking the stairs instead, even if it’s just one floor. If your busy schedule is preventing you from taking the necessary steps you need to get fit, even the smallest of changes can help make a difference. Exchange your shortcuts for one that is not cut in half.

The one where you run

Try incorporating exercise into your commute, whether it’s running or cycling, or even if it’s just switching part of your journey to physical activity. If you drive to work or take public transport, try getting off one stop earlier, or parking slightly further away and walking the rest of the way. Be so far from the line that the line is a dot to you.

The one without all the cheesecake

The office can prove a dangerous place for the waistline, amidst the birthday cakes, the biscuit tins and Christmas. So ask yourself, what are they feeding you? and stock up your drawer with healthy snacks instead such as nuts, protein bars and dried fruit – or switch to fruits, to help curb the afternoon hunger pangs.

The one with the Routine

Finally, staying fit is about commitment. We spend the majority of our waking hours in the office, so just making some small changes to your daily routine can help make a big difference to your health.
Create a routine and stick to it, and most importantly, make sure that you enjoy it – whether it’s chatting to friends while you’re out walking at lunch, or walking to your favourite coffeeshop.

This week is Sexual Health Awareness Week, designed to ignite conversations on sexual health and the stigmas surrounding it, while sharing advice and important information with the people who need it. The theme this year is relationships, sex and disability. At Doctorcall, our sexual health clinics in London and Manchester provide a range of sexual health services, including private STD testing, providing you with advice and helping you to take charge of your health.

Sexual health is important to both men and women, yet sex remains an incredibly difficult topic to talk about for a lot of people, raising feelings of embarrassment and awkwardness. Campaigns such as Sexual Health Awareness Week help to shed light on the subject, whether it’s by promoting safe sex, sharing information about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or promoting the importance of testing. 

In 2018, there were 447,694 diagnoses of STIs made in England, a 5% increase since 2017. London has the highest rate of STIs in England, with rates of new STI cases more prevalent in men (1,623 per 100,000) than women.

A discrete and supportive service

Many people with sexually transmitted infections do not get symptoms. If left untreated, however, STIs can affect your health, which means the sooner you get tested, the sooner you’ll be able to start treatment if it’s needed. The only way to learn if you have an STI is through a check-up.
